This new body of work continues my exploration of the history of black hair being used as a means of survival. From sowing grains in our hair to using various braid patterns as a means to communicate or even as a map our hair has played a crucial role in the survival of our ancestors.
In parallel quilts were used to depict hidden messages along the Underground Railroad to help guide escaped slaves.
With this body of work I am exploring the connection that can be found between the history of black hair and quilting; exploring how both were used as an essential means to our ancestors survival while also commenting on their innovation which we continue to see throughout black culture today.
