Along with my quilt and hair maps I began thinking of black hair as a vessel. As I continue looking into the history of black hair and how it was used to hold rice, grains, gold and more during the Middle passage from Africa to America and to help slaves escape; I realize more and more how much of a survival tool our own hair was/can be. Baskets were woven in order to help carry and store crops. Our ancestor used their hair to store dry grains in order to survive.
So, I have been thinking a lot of the hair as a vessel. I also have been thinking of artist Akoto-Bamfo’s installation Nsiso (1300 heads cast in concrete to represent the many Africans who were captures and taken to America) my goal is to create as many of these small vessels and display them in the shape of a boat filled with veggies and grains to represent our ancestors who use their hair as vessels as a means to survival during the middle passage.
